Willow Salix
While willows are usually considered bushes most species along the central coast will grow to small trees given the right conditions. Correctly identifying some willows can confuse both the newcomer and the experienced alike. There are at least 9 species of willow in Monterey County (8 of which are native) so I have chosen to illustrate a few here in their many forms and sizes. Six of the eight native species can grow to tree size with two species reaching maximum heights of over 40 feet.
A couple of varieties of willow will grow surprisingly large to over 40 feet with a large trunk and rough bark.
